The upcoming elections in Afghanistan will be key for democracy in the country. Afghan citizens will be given the opportunity to exercise their fundamental human right to vote and to influence their country’s future.
In the past week, voter registration centres in Ghor, Nangarhar and in Badghis province, as well as today in Kabul and in Baghlan province have been targeted by terrorist attacks, killing and injuring many.
The European Union expresses its sincere condolences to the families and friends of the victims and wishes a prompt recovery to the injured.
Such attacks will not prevent democracy from taking its course in Afghanistan. The European Union stands in solidarity with the authorities, stands with the Afghan people as they exercise their rights, and stands with all those who are working for a peaceful and stable future for all Afghans.
