Serbia: UNHCR News Update Serbia, 22 November 2015

Statistics/ Highlights

  • 6, 826 refugees and migrants arrived: 6, 585 from fYRo Macedonia and 241 from Bulgaria.

  • 5,222 departed to Croatia.

  • 3,192 asylum seekers were registered on 20 November, 4,886 on 21 November and 5,593 on 22 November, bringing the total to 464,141.

Serbia – fYRo Macedonia border

6, 585 refugees and migrants were assisted at the Miratovac Refugee Aid Point (RAP) upon arrival from fYRo Macedonia.

The weather was very cold at night and rainy during the day.

The police registered 5,449 asylum-seekers at the Presevo RC. The process took 2-3 hours, and some 1,300 asylumseekers waited inside and outside the RC at any one time.

The following organizations and entities were present 24/7 at the Presevo RC: UNHCR, SCRM, Police, Medical centre, Red Cross, UNICEF, Caritas, DRC, UNFPA and Remar. The following organizations are present 24/7 at Miratovac RAP: Police and Medical Centre, while for security reasons UNHCR, IOM, DRC, Philanthropy and MSF are present only during the day time until 6:00 pm.

UNHCR and partners assisted over 135 persons with specific needs (PWSN), and distributed 37 UNHCR blankets, 6 big (2l), 73 small bottles of water, 299 raincoats and 33 winter boots.

129 asylum-seekers frequented medical services inside the RC and also clinics of MSF/Humenica outside of it.

The UNICEF/DRC child-friendly space hosted 40 mothers and 154 children.

UNHCR assisted family reunification of 13 cases at the RC.

The religious holiday and bad weather slowed down the installation of Refugee Housing Units (RHUs).

Serbia – Bulgaria border

Some 241 refugees and migrants arrived to Dimitrovgrad and Zajecar.

Serbia- Belgrade

At any one time some 68 refugees and migrants rested in parks and public spaces. The weather was cold and rainy.

Serbia – Croatia border

A total of 5,222 asylum seekers crossed to Croatia on board 5 trains from the Sid train station.
It snowed and was very cold during the night.

The following organizations and entities were present at the Train Station: UNHCR, HCIT, WAHA, Local Medical service, SCRM and Police. UNHCR and HCIT staff assisted with fast tracking 31 PWSNs, including many that were transported by wheelchair from the bus to the train. UNHCR and HCIT donated 2 wheelchairs and one pair of crutches; WAHA provided medical care for approx. 300 persons at the train station.

The following items were distributed: 420 water bottles, 102 UNHCR blankets, 1,600 WFP HEP biscuits, 60 UNHCR bags, 15 disinfectant gel, 50 raincoats, 94 jackets, 143 pairs of boots and 56 pairs of socks. HCIT continued to distribute UNHCR and UNICEF food and NFI especially to the identified vulnerable cases.

SCRM, Red Cross, MSF, APC (Asylum Protection Center), CRS/BCM, World Vision, CZ volunteers and Intersos were present at the Adasevci RAP. Local medical services and MSF provided health care at the site for approx. 400 persons.
